Don't get me wrong - I think the acting is great, especially the wiry Pitt (always chewing something) and high-strung conman, Clooney. None of the characters are likeable and are sort-of under-developed, and their motivations all appear to be cynical and self-interested.

The final scene of the movie features events happening off-screen, with the two CIA characters admitting, perhaps through the fourth wall, that nothing made sense, we learned nothing, and the characters' motivations were a mystery. I realize they had alluded to "the gun" twice before that scene, but it still seemed out of place. Then, when the rising action peaks and we have the confrontation between Clooney and Pitt, it seems starkly and suddenly violent, almost difficult to watch.

The first 45 minutes or so appear to be isolated scenes, disjointed and disconnected from the others, with only loose narrative elements to tie them together. The plot of the film doesn't really seem to have a clearly defined narrative structure either. I laughed, thinking about the pitch to the likes of Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and John Malkovich, like, "Yeah, you're all going to share screen time, there's no clear lead, and Brad, your character is going to get killed off 60 minutes into this 90-minute feature." Totally bizarre. The first thing that struck me was that this movie had an amazing cast with very high-dollar actors, but it was only just north of 90 minutes long. Burn After Reading came up on some lists, so we watched it last night. After watching all of the Daniel Craig 007 films (and Goldeneye) last week, my partner and I were still feeling the itch for some more espionage-type filmmaking.
